Bored piles smaller than 45 cm in diameters are called as micro piles. They are drilled in soft soil conditions by auger methods or by using air punching technique in weathered rocks.
Compared to the bored piles, they have lower bearing capacities and flexural resistance. They are generally used as foundation pile to carry lower vertical loads or act as tension piles in the foundations where there is a possible risk for uplift failure. They can be used in shoring systems with lateral stabilizing elements (anchors, steel struts) in excavations.
